Engineers/Architects Guide

TAMLYN offers the following Allowable loads based on use of Southern Pine or Douglas Fir-Larch lumber.

Allowable loads are based on use of Southern Pine or Douglas Fir-Larch lumber with 10d x 1-1/2" joist hanger nails and are the lowest result obtained by comparing the following methods:

  • 1. least test load of which 1/8 inch deflection occurs;
  • 2. least ultimate test load divided by 3.0;
  • 3. allowable load calculated under the NFPA National Design Specification for Wood Construction; i.e., nail shear values based on allowable shear value per nail times number of nails designed to enter header. In many cases, nails are the factor limiting allowable loads, not the strength of the metal connector itself. Improper installation of products (i.e. using incorrect nails or failing to drive a nail into all provided holes) will adversely affect product load-bearing capability.

The "Normal" load capacities shown may be increased for duration of load under Table 2.3.2 of the NDS up to the "Maximum" allowable load tabulated. "Uplift" loads shown in the table have been increased by 1.6 for wind and seismic with no further increase allowed.

"TAMLYN" stencil-stamped and/or labeled with permanent marker or labels on structural products identifies TAMLYN as the manufacturer of that product. Inspectors, demand the following stencil-identification on all code-listed products: Manufacturer ID (e.g., TAMLYN)/product model ID (e.g., RT2L)/code group ID (e.g., ICC-ES)/compliance # (e.g., ESR-1347). If a company only imprints the company name and product ID, there is no assurance the product has been tested and manufactured in compliance with code regulations.
