Inset Wood Shearwall Panel |
INSET WOOD SHEARWALL PANEL DESIGN FEATURES: Designed to be an alternative to standard shearwall panels used in light wood frame construction for resisting lateral loads from earthquakes or wind. DESIGN GUIDANCE FOR INSET WOOD SHEAR PANELS The goal is to provide lateral capacity that is as good or better than traditional plywood sheathed shearwall panels, while not interfering with the installation of insulation sheathing directly to the framing members. Engineers from BSC, ATI, CERL and Tamlyn jointly developed the inset panel concept Construction Prior to ISP 4-8-S Inset Wood Shear Panel Installation: When a vapor barrier is needed between the building foundation and framing bottom plate, install 6 mil, 8 in. wide black low-density polyethylene multipurpose film (visqueen). Other materials, such as sill sealers are not permitted. The building wall framing should be constructed using 2 x 6 studs spaced at 24 in. on center, but with one stud left out at the center location of each shear panel. The framing top and bottom plates are nailed to the framing studs with two 16d nails at the end of each 2 x 6 stud. This framing must be Spruce-Pine-Fir stud grade studs and top plate, and a treated Hem Fir bottom plate (or stronger materials) Construction Prior to ISP 4-10-S Inset Wood Shear Panel Installation: When a vapor barrier is needed between the building foundation and framing bottom plate, install 6 mil, 8 in. wide black low-density polyethylene multipurpose film (visqueen). Other materials, such as sill sealers are not permitted. The building wall framing would be constructed using 2 x 6 studs spaced at 24 in. on center, but with one stud left out at the center location of each shear panel. The framing top and bottom plates are nailed to the framing studs with two 16d nails at the end of each 2 x 6 stud. This framing must be Douglas-Fir, Grade II studs and top plate, and a treated Douglas-Fir bottom plate NOTE: Detailed installation manual, specifications/technical documents, and engineering documents available |

Two-Story Stacked Inset Shear Panel Assembly This assembly consists of two 10' inset panels, stacked in a two-story configuration. This configuration is an effective yet practical method for assembling the inset panels for two-story construction. |
Two-Story Offset Inset Shear Panel Assembly This assembly is also a two-story, but the inset panels on the two stories are offset horizontally from one another with a 4 ft space between them. The intermediate studs, below the 2nd story panel, above the 1st story, or within the 4 ft space between the inset panels provide no lateral load resistance, and are not needed. This would allow windows or doors to be installed above, below or between the inset panels. |
